How to use the iPhone as a Tethered Modem (Windows XP/Vista)

Section One: Set up the iPhone as a modem with Win XP using a USB cable.

Step 1: Requirements for internet tethering on the iPhone.

Internet tethering requires the following:

  • iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S using iPhone OS 3.0 or later
  • A cellular data connection (must be subscribing to a data plan)
  • Wireless data plan that supports tethering. (contact your wireless service provider)
  • USB or Bluetooth-capable Mac or PC using the following operating systems:
    • USB tethering: Mac OS X 10.5.7 or Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista
    • Bluetooth tethering: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (or later) or Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista

 Note: Internet tethering does NOT use the Wi-Fi connection on the iPhone:

  • Internet tethering CAN significantly INCREASE cellular data usage.
  • Disable Internet tethering when you’re not using it to avoid unexpected data usage or charges.
  • Internet tethering is supported while roaming if your wireless carrier supports this feature.
  • International roaming charges may apply; contact your wireless carrier for pricing and availability.
  • When using a 2G network (GPRS/EDGE), incoming or outgoing calls temporarily disable tethering.

Step 2: How to enable internet tethering on the iPhone.

On the iPhone, complete the following steps:

1) To enable tethering on the iPhone; from the Home screen go to Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering.
2) While tethered, the iPhone status bar turn’s blue, indicating tethering is active.
3) Tethered connections appear as LAN or Bluetooth connections on the computer.
4) Tethered connection remains on until you:

  • Disconnect the USB cable or Bluetooth connection on the iPhone or computer.
  • Disable Internet Tethering on the iPhone; from the Home screen go to Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering

Step 3: Set up the APN [Same path for Win XP and Vista].

On the computer, complete the following steps:

1)       Go to the Control Panel [Start>Settings>Control Panel (Professional) or [Start>Control Panel (Home Edition).

 2) In the Control Panel window, double-click on Phone and Modem option.

 3) In the Phone and Modem options widow, click on the Modems tab.

 4) Select Standard Modem and click on the Properties button.

 5) In the Standard Modem Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.

6) In the Extra initialization commands field, type in one of  the following:

+cdgcont=1,"IP","internet.com"

+cdgcont=1,"IP","isp.apn"

FYI: You may need to confirm with your wireless service provider which APN is on your account.

7) Click OK in the Standard Modem Properties window.

8) In the Phone and Modem option window, click OK
 


 

Step 4: Configure a Dial-Up Networking (DUN)

1) Go to the New Connection Wizard [Start>Settings>Network Connections>New Connection Wizard (Professional) or [Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>Create a New Connection (Home Edition)].

2) Click Next.

3) Select the Connect to the Internet option and then click Next.

4) Select Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.

5) Select Connect using a dial-up modem, and then click Next.

6) If the Select a Device screen appears, select the Modem – Standard Modem check box and then click Next.

7) In the ISP Name field, type a name for your connection i.e. Rogers-BlackBerry, and click Next.

8) In the Phone number field, type *99# and then click Next.

9) Indicate which users will have access to the connection, and then click Next.

10) You can keep the username and password empty and click Next or you can enter wapuser1 for the username and wap for the password. Then click Finish.

11) Connect your BlackBerry device via USB cable and happy surfing.


Section Two: Set up the iPhone as a modem with Win XP/Vista using Bluetooth.

Step 1: Bluetooth Connection

In order to set up Dial-Up Networking using Bluetooth, complete the following steps:

Turn on the Discoverable mode on the iPhone

1) Turn on the Discoverable mode on the iPhone: from the Home screen, tap on Settings>General>Bluetooth; move the slider to the ON position.  

Pair the BlackBerry and the Computer

1) On the PC, click on the Start button, go to Control Panel>Bluetooth Devices.

2) Click Add.

3) Select the My device is setup and ready to be found check box, and then click on Next.

4) When the BlackBerry is detected, select the check box next to the BlackBerry, and then click Next.

5) Select the Let me choose my own passkey option.

6) Type a passkey in the field provided, and then click Next.

7) On the iPhone, type in the same passkey entered in Step 6.

8) On the PC, when the Completing the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard screen appears, click on Finish.

9) On the iPhone, when prompted to accept an incoming Bluetooth connection, select Don’t Ask Again, and then click Yes. 

Step 2: Set up the Internet Access Point Name (APN)

1) To set up the Internet Access Point Name: On the PC, go to Control Panel>Phone and Modem options.

2) Select the Modems tab.

3) Select Standard Modem Over Bluetooth Link, and then click Properties.

4) Select the Advanced tab.

5) In the Extra initialization commands field, type in one of the following:

+cdgcont=1,”IP”,”internet.com”

+cdgcont=1,”IP”,”isp.apn”

FYI: You may need to confirm with your wireless service provider which APN is on your account.

 6) In the Standard Modem Properties window, click OK.

7) In the Phone and Modem option window, click OK.

Step 3: Configure Dial-Up Networking

1) To configure Dial-Up networking, on the PC go to Start>Settings>Network Connections.

2) Right click on Bluetooth DUN connection, and then select Properties.

3) Select the Networking tab.

4) Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

5) Click Properties.

6) Click Advanced.

7) Select the General tab, and clear the Use IP header Compression check box.

8) Click OK to close all open windows.

9) Go to Start>Settings>Network Connections.

10). Double-click New Connection Wizard and then click Next.

11) Select Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.

12) Select Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.

13) Select Connect using Dial-Up modem, and then click Next.

14) Select Modem – Standard Modem Over Bluetooth link, and then click Next.

15) If the Select a Device screen appears, select Modem – Standard Modem check box, and then click Next.

16) Clear the ISP Name field and then click Next.

17) In the Phone number field, type *99# and then click Next.

18) You can keep the username and password empty and click Next or you can enter wapuser1 for the username and wap for the password. Then click Finish.

Step 4: Connect to the Internet

1) On the PC, click Start>Settings>Network Connections>(The name of the network connection).

2) Type in the username or password (maybe blank depending on choices made previously).

3) Click Dial.

4) At this point your BlackBerry device should be connected, happy surfing.
